Well, the wait is officially over and the news is that SumOfUs has decided to go in a different direction. Alas, not the word for which we at Scott For SumOfUs.org were hoping, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
Regardless, running this mini-campaign and watching how positively so many people responded was truly exciting and inspiring. Thank you one more time to everyone who signed the Petition, shared their thoughts/experiences, and posted encouraging notes to Facebook and Twitter. We really are deeply grateful and appreciative of your support and efforts.
We continue to believe that SumOfUs is an important organization doing vital work. We encourage everyone who participated in the campaign to keep an eye on SumOfUs, check out their campaigns, sign the petitions that speak to you, and support their work in whatever way you can. It will be exciting to see what SumOfUs and the successful applicant do as they work to increase the organization’s presence and impact in Canada.
In closing, we’ll leave you with an excellent poem of Gary Snyder’s to which a good friend introduced Scott many years ago and that has stuck, I Went into the Maverick Bar:
I went into the Maverick Bar
In Farmington, New Mexico.
And drank double shots of bourbon
backed with beer.
My long hair was tucked up under a cap
I’d left the earring in the car.Two cowboys did horseplay
by the pool tables,
A waitress asked us
where are you from?
a country-and-western band began to play
“We don’t smoke Marijuana in Muskokie”
And with the next song,
a couple began to dance. They held each other like in High School dances
in the fifties;
I recalled when I worked in the woods
and the bars of Madras, Oregon.
That short-haired joy and roughness—
America—your stupidity.
I could almost love you again. We left—onto the freeway shoulders—
under the tough old stars—
In the shadow of bluffs
I came back to myself,
To the real work, to
“What is to be done.”
Some things work out and others do not. But we ought not to linger too long. Always waiting, the real work. “What is to be done.”
So thanks. And let’s get back to it.
